CMB Support to Participation in the
First Global Symposium on Health Systems Research
1. Criteria for selection of participants
For selecting participants to be supported by China Medical Board (CMB) to attend the first global symposium on health systems research, selection criteria were agreed as follows.
-Accepted abstracts;
-Order of the priority: speaker-waitlist-poster;
-Number of accepted abstracts in an institution;
-Distribution of CMD-defined universities;
-Distribution of senior and junior researchers; and
-Distribution of subjects.
2. Selection committee
Three professors were organized for selecting the candidates according the above criteria, including Prof Xu Biao from Fudan University (CMB distinguished Professor), Prof Wu Qunhong from Ha’rbin University (CMB distinguished Professor), and Prof Meng Qingyue from Peking University. Those three professors do not use CMB fund to attend the symposium if they go for it.
3. Distribution of accepted abstracts and roles in the symposium
Table 1 shows the distribution of abstracts accepted by the symposium organizers and roles of the attendees. Amongst the total of 56 abstracts that were accepted, 5 of them are oral speakers, 4 on the waiting list, and rest are posters. Authors of the abstracts come from 18 universities and academic institutions. The last three institutions in the table were added to the CMB grant list as requested by the symposium organizers to ensure speakers can attend the symposium.

4. List of the grantee
Table 2 lists the final grantees. A total of 24 people were granted. Due to various reasons, three people were not able to make the trips.

5. The impact
CMB support ensures that all the key Chinese participants including speakers and researchers from western region can attend the symposium. CMB support has been a provoking and stimulating fund for mobilizing fund from other sources to support other Chinese participation, including university fund, research grants, and EU fund. The 60 Chinese participants in the symposium are the core team in health policy and systems research in China. Participation in this symposium is a good experience for both capacity building and international exchanges.
6. Budget
It is estimated that a balance is kept as budgeted (95,000 US$) in a inflation time period. Accurate expenditures are being made.
